Advice from Aunty Jing

In line with my recent ski trip.. I present to you ….

5 Things NOT to do when attempting Snow Sports

1. Never..never, go without adequate clothing.

By this I mean.. enough clothes to keep you warm. The last thing you want to do is look like some idiot from a tropical country who is suffering from hypothermia..Also, I remind you to wear wind pants, or any pants that is water-proof, unless you want a wet b-e-h-i-n-d.

 2. Never, never put on skis that are pointing down a slope

I’m sure this is fairly obvious, you wouldn’t want look like the skis have taken YOU for a run ..would you?

3. Never, ever, ever ski without your eyes

This is one of the deadliest things to do. LOOK where you are going, not down at your skis, or at the scenery around you. Yes, it is beautiful, but if you don’t look where you are going….you might end up wrapped up like a mummy..or if you are heartless enough, trip over yourself and dive into a kid.

 4. Never, never sit down on the pommel

If you don’t know what a pommel is, it is this little thing which pulls you up a slope, which is placed between your legs. Under any circumstances, you are not to rest your entire weight on it. C’mon it’s a measly little plastic thingy which is not designed to bear your weight. Believe me, I’ve witnessed some people fall in the snow because of it. And IF you do fall down while on the pommel, LET GO. I repeat myself..as this is of utmost importance, let go of that plastic thingy if you fall..unless you desire to be dragged along…not a pretty sight I tell you..

5.Never, ever, ever, ever attempt any stunts you are not ready for.

This is ‘specially for the daredevils out there. You don’t want to try something you are not ready for. Not unless you want to go home looking like some prize fighter and having to pay a pretty penny for medical bills.

Now, that I have lectured you on what you should not do, here’s what you SHOULD do.

5 things you should do when attempting Snow Sports

1. Always, always make sure your ski boots are tight/an adequate fit.

This is especially important so that you don’t end up with a broken leg/ankle.

2. Always have confidence in yourself.

Don’t be afraid of falling, if you don’t try, you won’t learn.

3 Always take lessons if you have NO clue whatsoever about your winter sport of choice.

I’ve put this down because I personally learnt a lot from the lesson. BUT most importantly was..I saw some people (who obviously had decided NOT to take lessons) flailing around attempting, I repeat, attempting to ski. However, I noticed that most of their time was spent on their b-e-h-i-n-d-s or flying straight into poor, innocent passerbys. Not much fun I tell you..

4. Always observe, learn and practice

You can always learn by observing the people around you. Common sense would tell you to look at the ones who are better than you. Once you have observed, practice those moves..practice does make perfect. Don’t worry if you don’t make it the first time. You are not perfect..but I am..haha.

5. Always, always, always have fun

The main purpose of engaging in winter sports is definitely for you to have fun. So don’t hang back for fear of embarrassment or hurt coz’ ‘you’ll lose out….seriously, if you don’t attempt it in regards to the reasons listed above…you have some issues and need some help..

I agree with you totally 100% of the way. You had me laughing here, Jing! HAd you been skiing before? I wish you could've seen the first (and only) time I went skiing. You'd havbe DIED laughing. Seriously, you would've. I'd add one more thing to your point about adequate clothing. Snow/wind pants that are overalls are a good idea. They may look a little dorky but they'll save you from having snow up your back and down your pants when you go tumbling head over heels...
